As a travel writer, I&#8217;ve traveled extensively over the last ten years, and I have yet to find a mountain destination anywhere in the world that has everything Lake Tahoe has to offer while also being so strikingly beautiful.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Located on the California-Nevada border, northeast of Sacramento, Lake Tahoe is a popular destination for adventure lovers, families and anyone wanting to reconnect with nature in the great outdoors.<\/p>\n<p>Known for its crystal blue water, beautiful beaches, excellent hiking and world class ski resorts, Lake Tahoe attracts over 2.7 million visitors annually and has been consistently ranked in the top five best places to visit in California, top five best adventure vacations in the U.S.A., and it was rated &#8220;America&#8217;s best lake&#8221; by USA Today.<\/p>\n<p>I lived in North Lake Tahoe&nbsp;for a winter season during college and taught <a href=\"https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/ski-trip-packing-guides\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">skiing and snowboarding<\/a> at Northstar Resort, and I used to own a <a href=\"https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/best-airbnbs-lake-tahoe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">vacation home<\/a>&nbsp;in Carnelian Bay.<\/p>\n<p>From my experience being somewhat of a local, I put together this Lake Tahoe guide to help you make the most of your visit to this incredible destination!<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Lake Tahoe Family Getaway 2020\" width=\"1100\" height=\"619\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/oSuOXD27ysY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2>Where To Stay In Lake Tahoe<\/h2>\n<p>Lake Tahoe offers an array of <a href=\"https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/best-airbnbs-lake-tahoe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cute cabins and luxury vacation homes<\/a>&nbsp;on both the north and south shore.<\/p>\n<p>I personally prefer to stay on the north shore in Carnelian Bay or Tahoe City when I visit Lake Tahoe. This area is gorgeous and I love being close to the lake while also having access to all the great restaurants in this area.<\/p>\n<p>I used to own a house in Carnelian Bay but we recently sold it, so I now try to look for affordable rentals in the area. My daughter and I usually visit Lake Tahoe in the summer to enjoy the lake or winter to ski, but these high season times can be pricey. In fact all of North Lake Tahoe embraces a low paced, relaxed vibe so much so that locals here often refer to it as &#8220;Tahoe Time.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>North Lake Tahoe is more pristine, less crowded and feels more connected to nature compared to South Lake Tahoe. South Lake Tahoe is the largest city around Lake Tahoe with a permanent resident population of just over 21,000 people.<\/p>\n<p>There is world class skiing on the south shore at Heavenly Resort along with an array of great restaurants, bars, and shops. From the Reno Airport it is an easy 45 minute drive to Truckee, a 50 minute drive to Incline Village, a 1 hour drive to Tahoe City and a 1 hour drive to Carnelian Bay.<\/p>\n<p>Almost anywhere in North Lake Tahoe can be reached by car from the Reno Airport in an hour or less, and you can drive to&nbsp;South Lake Tahoe from the airport in about 1 hour 25 minutes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Ubers are also available from Reno Airport up to Lake Tahoe but they are pretty pricey. The company takes the rafts from you at the end and returns them while you take a shuttle back to the point of origin. To save money, you can also just buy individual inner tubes at the gas station across the street from the raft rental places, but then you also have to make sure you have 2 cars; leave one car at the end point and one at the starting point. It\u2019s about a 3 hour raft ride, slow and mellow.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Art Walks &amp; Art Tours<\/strong> &#8211; In the summer months there are art walks and art tours in North Lake Tahoe and South Lake Tahoe. When it snows in the Sierra Nevada Mountains it doesn&#8217;t just snow a few inches, it usually dumps, leaving Lake Tahoe covered in multiple feet of new, fresh powder.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Lake Tahoe also typically has sunny weather offering &#8220;spring skiing&#8221; conditions most of the winter. So when it&#8217;s not snowing it is usually sunny and nice out.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>There are <strong>16 ski resorts<\/strong> in the Lake Tahoe area offering something for everyone. Pricey but a great place for lunch, dinner or drinks right on the lake and also a good spot to get on your rental boat in the summer.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lanzastahoe.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lanza&#8217;s Restaurant<\/a> &#8211; Great family style Italian food in Kings Beach, reasonably prices, big portions, fun, lively atmosphere.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.steakhousetahoe.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Old Range Steakhouse<\/a> &#8211; An upscale, vintage steakhouse located in Tahoe Vista. Aged meats, prime rib, full cocktail bar and our famous wall of wines. Great spot for a date night!<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/zaslakefront.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Za\u2019s Lakefront Bar &amp; Grill<\/a>&nbsp;&#8211; Excellent pizza, burgers, pasta and salads, excellent (casual) outdoor dining on the lake in Tahoe City. I ate here recently with my husband and daughter and absolutely loved it.
